Presentación: Others to the Front

Others to the Front empezó a esbozarse en enero de 2021.

BIO OTHERS TO THE FRONT

Others to the Front began to get together in January 2021. We made our first public appearance in Specka, in March, with masks on, sitting at tables and surrounded by friends. It meant a lot, but it hadn’t been the dance we had hoped for. During the summer the flame lit up, a flame of something that ended up exploding in September 2021, with the intention of queerifying and politicizing the dance floors of Madrid by putting the other to the front.

Throughout 2021 and 2022, HOLE was the party that mainly basically marked our presence in the Madrid scene. HOLE was a space for the expression of others, both in the booth and on the dancefloor, others who have not traditionally fit into the traditional club selection criteria. During this time, we also held events with like-minded collectives such as Xoxa NYC, Bleak.WTF from Berlin, House of (S)PUNK from Barcelona or N1GTHNO1SE from Madrid.

Since May 2022, we have been broadcasting the podcast House of Others, which is dedicated specifically to the recovery of underground house music and has already twenty installments of DJs from both sides of the Atlantic. In July 2022 we held our first OTHERS OPEN DECKS, which constituted a platform of learning and sharing knowledge.

In March 2023 the last HOLE was held, and with this closing a new phase opened for Others to the Front: GL!TZ* is the collective’s new challenge in which we want to present the local and communitarian dimension of the transnational queer-rave scene.

#021 Can we feel it?

«Following the spirit of the series, we have tried to portrait the kind of house set that we love.
Its all about building a groove that moves in the direction of collective freedom.
For that mission we have resorted to both classic and new producers from both sides of the pond.
We wanted to make it deep, uplifting and funky. We hope you feel it the same way.»

Alianzas: Others Needs Others

    Unidos resistiremos, divididos caeremos.

***********

  • Others is understood as an infrastructure of networks of affinity and affection which finds itself constantly in progress, understanding that the personal is political, recognizing as social and systemic what was previously perceived as something isolated and individual.
At the core of everything that happens here is our collaboration, connection, collective creation and mutual support. We build together to go further, side by side, because alone we can but with friends and allies it is always better.
  • We join the original idea of Acid House: Peace, Love and Unity. Peace because in violence the powerful always win. Love because affection is the necessary lubricant for mutual support and reciprocity. And Unity because on the dance floor nobody is more than anybody, and because as it has always been:
United we stand, divided we fall.
  • So far we have created alliances with the following collectives that focus on dance music and the visibility of the queer & bipoc community: XOXA NYC based in Brooklyn, BLEAK.WTF between Berlin and New York, HOUSE OF (S)PUNK in Barcelona, SOFT SPOT seated in Hannover and N1GHTN01SE in Madrid.
We have hot collaborations coming up just around the corner.
  • We feel the need to create a critical network that questions everything, in order to create a community which is uncomplacent with what the cisheteropatriarchal system and its structures offer.
We join other like-minded collectives so as to empower our common vision, creating a collaborative network to support our community, our desires, our projects and our imagination.

**********

HACKNEY STATE OF MIND

Local scenes matter. Marie Malarie and Michelle Mannetti openly claim to be part of the East London scene. More specifically, Hackney. Where does this queer scene, a scene which appears is one of London’s most historical and identifiable working class neighborhoods, come from?

Underground culture is not new to Hackney. From the 1960s onwards, Hackney has been a cultural hotbed, heated by sound-systems and a multitude of small and medium-sized venues where the Anglo-Caribbean diaspora got together as a community.

In the nineties, Hackney was a broadcasting site for hundreds of pirate radio stations that played Drum and Bass around the clock. At the turn of the century, Hackney has turned into the scene of the epic raves of the Bedlam collective, with the mythical Liberator (Julian, Chris and Aaron) as the visible heads of a scene that is still alive.

Hackney became the birthplace of a whole musical genre, grime, a cross between different hip hop and electronic styles, which marked the early years of the 21st century and turned into the soundtrack of London’s multiracial peripheries.

But as in so many other popular neighborhoods with a non-submissive cultural identity, the forces of gentrification and speculation took Hackney by storm with the London 2012 Olympic Games. The expulsion of many of its original inhabitants and rising house prices seriously jeopardized the existence of Hackney’s underground dance scene.

Throughout all this history, Hackney has always been home to alternative queer spaces as an opposing force to the traditional gay clubs of central London. The George and Dragon or Boombox were spaces that marked an era. Like many other underground venues, the most celebrated queer venues in the neighborhood were closing, until two veterans of the scene, Dan Beaumont and Matt Tucker, opened Dalston Superstore in 2009, a queer space that from the beginning aspired to bring together the queer community of the neighborhood and expand its radius of influence to include the whole of London.

Since then, Hackney has continued to grow and to serve as the center of a new queer scene, with Michelle Mannetti and Marie Malarie as recognizable figures within this scene, which picks up the torch of Hackney’s underground tradition.

GL!TZ*

MANIFIESTO

Somos salvajes.

MANIFESTO

GL!TZ*, as a re-turn to the origins and values of house and techno, an idea that seeks to consolidate a fair and safe dance floor for all. rave culture has become a self-organized method of building communities of equals, ever since its countercultural, African-American and gay origins in Detroit, Chicago and New York.

GL!TZ* as an otherness, queer, as rave culture. The dancefloor is the habitat of the community, a habitat where social, political, affective, sexual relations are tied to the incessant rythm of the bass, which invites us to blend on the dancefloor. No one is more or less than anyone else on the dancefloor.

GL!TZ* as an impertinent reality, as an open path, as an infinite dance, as a revolutionary dancing body. There is no such thing as experience without estrangement, transgression, maladjustment, dislocation, transit, interruption…

GL!TZ* as an empowered howl to claim the right of self-determination of queer bodies who have taken the central antagonistic stage and have the power to aggregate the new anti-capitalist, post-gender and post-colonial struggles.

GL!TZ* as politics of the night, as an action where we can create, desire and feel new imaginaries that challenge, dislodge and doubt the imposed cisheterocapitalist imaginary; where we can let ourselves be run over by the music, and dance fiercely and asymmetrically between the disheveled and torn, in search of individual and collective frenzy.

From the right of admission by bouncers in clubs,
for white, straight and beautiful people,
to the dance of dissident, crippled and sweaty bodies.
Our body asks for movement, and we will not deny them it.
We need the dance floor, now more than ever.
We don’t just want it, we need it.
We are the wild ones.

GL!TZ*

Manifiesto: It’s time for the Others

***********

  • Others to the Front was born from the desire to create a non-existent and needed space, where it is possible to criticize, through music and dance, a system that oppresses us and which dictates rules to which we do not belong, nor to which we want to belong.
  • Others to the Front is a political bet of transformation, intervention and action coming from the dancefloor, the club, the music, the mix. While we DJ and dance we create reflection and content.
Our method is self-organization, cooperative work, mutual help and horizontal decision-making in assemblies.
  • In Others we wish the main dimension we build to be the collective one, putting the tools, the knowledge or the time of each one of us to communal use.
Electronic club music, as in every discipline, is completely invaded by a personal careerism that is presented as the only way to escape from a generalized precariousness.
We believe that one of the ways to overcome this situation is through a socialized utilization of the scarce resources that this model generates, to give them value and put them to collective use.
  • At Others we want to build community:
    – Against the club and nightlife environment dominated by cis-white heterosexual men who define who is in and who is out.
    – Against a dance floor that only responds to the easy consumption of bodies and money.
    – Against a world trivialized by fame.

It’s time for Others to the Front!

#020 Love Languages

«Originally rooted in black & queer spaces,
house music has historically been a sanctuary for the oppressed.
We honor this history through our own exploration of artists, labels, remixes, samples, etc
all of which has led to house & techno as our love language.
We tend to have an affinity for groovy bass lines and unique tones & textures that get your body movin.
This mix is yet another example of our 10 year long adventure into electronic music together;
showing love to prolific artists who have produced for decades (and continue releasing music),
to innovative artists who evolve these sounds, and a nod to Philadelphia creators.»

Esta mezcla es otro ejemplo de nuestros 10 años de aventura juntos en la música electrónica;

#019 Strictly 4 The Love

«I had a moment of pure ecstasy and surrender on the dancefloor
when Cinthie dropped “4 The Love” by Karizma and DJ Spen last year at smartbar.
This is where the name of this mix comes from—and those vocals convey precisely what dance music means to me.
These tracks, spanning the continuum of House and UK Garage, were selected and mixed from the heart <3

#017 House Of Them Booties

he querido integrar clásicos y precursores de Dance Mania, Relief y
💘»
