#030 In The Mood For Love

 «5 años hace que empecé a pinchar y ahora no quiero imaginar mi vida sin un mixer entre las manos. El House tardó un poco más en llegar y ahora no quiero imaginar mi vida sin esta cadencia que ilumina cada momento de oscuridad.

Desde sus inicios, el House contiene la fuerza de una comunidad en pie de lucha, una comunidad cansada de esconderse, una alianza sólida entre la otredad. El House es un grito optimista de ¡BASTA YA! que recuerda quiénes somos y abre imaginarios de futuros posibles. Esa es la misión de House of Others, acercar y ampliar futuribles.

Este mix investiga los ritmos del House más underground en combinación con lo más pop, como RuPaul o Madonna. Es una mezcla de temas que me han movido este verano, old skool y new skool en servicio de ritmos que nos desplazan, que nos cuestionan, que nos convierten en una sola materia, al menos por unos instantes, más fuerte que cualquier forma dada.

Espero que os llegue la energía que había la mañana que grabé este mix, junto a un cuerpo de baile de criaturas maravillosas que te recuerdan quién eres, y eso es lo que tienen en común con la música House. El House es quien te acompaña y apoya en cada momento. El House no juzga y no espera nada, solo se deja bailar, y ahora no quiero imaginar mi vida sin la comunidad que el House me ha regalado.

In The Mood For Love es un grito de amor dedicado a dos grandes amigues que están pasando un momento de duelo para que se dejen bailar.

5 years since I started DJing and now I don’t want to imagine my life without a mixer in my hands.

House took a little longer to arrive and now I don’t want to imagine my life without this groove that illuminates every moment of darkness.

From its beginnings, House has contained the strength of a community in struggle, a community tired of hiding, a solid alliance between otherness’. House is an optimistic cry of ENOUGH! that reminds us of who we are and opens up imaginaries of possible futures. That is the mission of House of Others, to bring us closer and expand potentialities.

This mix investigates the rhythms of the most underground House in combination with the most pop, like RuPaul or Madonna. It’s a mix of themes that moved me this summer, old skool and new skool coming together in rhythms that displace us, that question us, that turn us into a single matter, at least for a few moments, stronger than any given form.

I hope you get the energy of that morning when I recorded this mix, together with a corps de ballet of marvelous creatures that remind you of who you are, and that’s what they have in common with House music. House is the one who accompanies and supports you in every moment. House doesn’t judge and doesn’t expect anything, it just lets you dance, and now I don’t want to imagine my life without the community that House has given me.

In The Mood 4 Love is a cry of love dedicated to two great friends who are going through a time of mourning, so they can let themselves go and dance.

#026 Follow The (e)Motions

«This set feels very special to me. These are tracks that I’ve been listening to a lot recently, some are tracks that I’ve been playing out for crowds, and others are recently discovered. I created this mix with the intention to evoke the emotion and rawness of House grooves of the 90s and late 80s that really cannot be replicated today. Most are vocal House, with some special intergenerational acid moments. There are a few tracks from this year/within the last decade, but I felt like the newer tracks still embody a sense of that 90s House nostalgia that I love so deeply. I’ve been inspired by mixes recently from the House DJ/producer giants and legends that have always made this DJ thing seem so effortless. I’ve also been listening more specifically to releases from legendary NYC labels. One of them is Easy Street Records (you’ll hear a few tracks on here from that label); I’ve also found some dope edits that have accompanied those popular releases. I think one thing to consider as listeners/DJs of this generation when it comes to keeping the legacy of house alive, is to really do your research about these artists that came before us. So many of them did not get their proper dues, and that’s across various genres, but especially for Black folks in this industry. To connect more intentionally to the music is to know whose love and labor went into creating these sounds and messages. You never know what sort of magic can happen when we seek to know these artists that maybe only had 2 or 3 releases. We might become their new audience for this generation if we seek them out and lift them up. The main thing I hope this mix does–like all mixes in the spirit of classic House–is bring you to your feet. If you’re at work listening in your headphones, I hope it transports you to another place. I hope you enjoy this journey, from me to you.»

«Este set es muy especial para mí. Son temas que he estado escuchando mucho últimamente, algunos son temas que he estado pinchando para multitudes y otros los he descubierto recientemente. He creado esta mezcla con la intención de evocar la emoción y la crudeza de los ritmos House de los 90s y finales de los 80s que realmente no se pueden reproducir hoy en día. La mayoría son House vocal, con algunos momentos especiales de Acid intergeneracional. Hay algunos temas de este año o de la última década, pero creo que los más recientes aún transmiten esa nostalgia del House de los 90s que tanto me gusta. Últimamente me he inspirado en las mezclas de les gigantes y leyendas del House DJ/productore que siempre han hecho que esto de ser DJ parezca tan fácil. También he estado escuchando más específicamente lanzamientos de sellos legendarios de Nueva York. Uno de ellos es Easy Street Records (aquí escucharás algunos temas de ese sello); también he encontrado algunas ediciones geniales que han acompañado a esos populares lanzamientos. Creo que algo que debemos tener en cuenta como oyentes y DJs de esta generación, a la hora de mantener vivo el legado del House, es investigar sobre les artistes que nos precedieron. Muches de elles no recibieron lo que se merecían, y eso en todos los géneros, pero sobre todo para la gente negra de esta industria. Para conectar más intencionadamente con la música hay que saber de quién es el amor y el trabajo que se invirtió en crear estos sonidos y mensajes. Nunca se sabe qué tipo de magia puede suceder cuando tratamos de conocer a estos artistas que tal vez sólo tienen 2 o 3 lanzamientos. Puede que nos convirtamos en su nuevo público para esta generación si los buscamos y los encumbramos. Lo principal que espero que haga esta mezcla -como todas las mezclas con espíritu de House Clásico- es ponerte en pie. «Me considero und DJ de House, mismo si a veces el House como género no domina en mis sets. La manera en que voy armando la noche —en conjunto con les bailarines en la pista— es algo que viene de ahí, y de recuerdos y experiencias compartidas con gente que definieron mi propio sentimiento del House, que está alejado de la narrativa oficial. Es en Colonia, la capital de la música electrónica en Alemania, en su momento denominada “Baby Chicago” por les DJs que nos venían a visitar desde aquella ciudad, donde conocí la pista de baile que proponía cada semana nuevos pasos. Christian S y yo teníamos una fiesta llamada “Lost” a la cual invitamos a Elbee Bad, con el que me fui en tren de Berlin a Colonia. Para mi hubo un antes y un después ahí, de cómo tocar, de cómo dialogar con la pista de baile. Este set que les presento me llevó a esos recuerdos y refleja una manera de ver el House que tiene que ver con Elbee Bad, The prince of dance, que tiene que ver con mi sello Cómeme, con Ana Helder, con Katerina, Diegors, con Christian S, con Sano – y que también tiene que ver con lo Latino en el House, y con Sudáfrica, donde el House nunca se fue y donde siempre lo he sentido muy vivo, en nuevas interpretaciones de un mismo sentimiento. En Johannesburgo sonaban temas de Cómeme (Como “ósea hello” de Diegors), y les DJs de Cómeme siempre tocaban tracks que venían de allá – con DJ Spoko marcando el paso de los ritmos que disfrutábamos en ese momento, culminando un día en el manifiesto colaborativo entre Spoko, Elbee y yo que fue “Something about the Groove”, título de mi Mix.
Ellos ya no están con nosotres, pero de alguna manera si permanecen vivos en nuestro ritmos y sonidos, y nuestra propia interpretación del House.»

«I consider myself a House DJ, even if sometimes House as a genre doesn’t dominate my sets. The way I put the night together – together with the dancers on the dancefloor – is something that comes from there, and from memories and experiences shared with people that defined my own feeling of House, which is far from the official narrative. It is in Cologne, the capital of electronic music in Germany, at the time called «Baby Chicago» by the DJs who came to visit us from that city, where I met the dancefloor that proposed new steps every week. Christian S and I had a party called «Lost» to which we invited Elbee Bad, with whom I went by train from Berlin to Cologne. For me there was a before and after there, how to play, how to dialogue with the dance floor. This set that I present to you took me back to those memories and reflects a way of seeing House that has to do with Elbee Bad, The prince of dance, that has to do with my label Cómeme, with Ana Helder, with Katerina, Diegors, with Christian S, with Sano – and that also has to do with the Latin in House, and with South Africa, where House never left and where I have always felt it very much alive, in new interpretations of the same feeling. In Johannesburg there were Comeme tracks playing (like Diegors’ «ósea hello»), and the Comeme DJs were always playing tracks that came from there – with DJ Spoko setting the pace for the beats we were enjoying at the time, culminating one day in the collaborative manifesto between Spoko, Elbee and myself that was «Something about the Groove», the title of my Mix.
They are no longer with us, but somehow they do remain alive in our rhythms and sounds, and our own interpretation of House.»
