«I wanted to include a lot of music that influenced me early on,
as well as tunes that were in heavy rotation when I first started DJing outside the bedroom.
Tunes that spark joy and happiness.
»

«Quería incluir un montón de música que me influyó desde el principio,
así como canciones que estaban en rotación pesada cuando empecé a DJ fuera de la habitación.
Melodías que provocan alegría y felicidad.

#070 Funkin’ in the Dark

  • junio 18, 2024 19:00

«1. Funky (adj.) – grimy, sticky, smelly
A good friend of mine once told me, “Funk music is getting over the blues.”
The word and that phrase capture the sensory input, emotional output, and historical weight that come with a great House set. When the clubs in NYC opened back up in 2021, most of us turned completely feral. Interestingly, the DJs came back first, live music took a little bit to percolate.
After my plucking along as a guitar player with a Afro-Caribbean Funk band in live venues for years I had tasted the dancefloor, but yearned for folks who lived it. Once my group fell apart, I was lost. House music brought me home. I found a community that shared my passion for movement, obsession with 4 to floor, and that love for being drenched in sweat in a crowd of tons of people. Coming to the club was almost like entering a neon chrysalis and exiting as a saucy butterfly.
House music is a sanctuary for the freaks.
House was built with african diasporic sounds spun by queer, black, & latinx djs; it was born in Detroit/Chicago/NYC bathhouses, sweaty industrial spaces and packed loft parties. Spanning organ heaters, Hard House, Disco Screamers, Dirty Acid, Ghetto-tech/Booty House sounds, I wanted to make a mix that’d encapsulate the spirit of a lot of those foundational places and spaces while celebrating the wide range of house flavors – specifically keyed in on Houses’ 90s heyday.

«»1. Funky (adj.) – mugriento, pegajoso, maloliente

HoO Compilation Vol.1

  • junio 11, 2024 13:12

OTHERS TO THE FRONT PRESENTS:
HoO VOL.1
[0TTF003-HOO1]
Release Date: Tuesday, June 11, 2024

Others to the Front is releasing its first compilation EP next week, celebrating the second anniversary of the House of Others podcast, with the desire to continue strengthening the community, in permanent construction around HoO and its radical love for underground House culture, which has as its mission to bring back this queer & POC music to its legitimate audience.

All the DJ-producers participating in this EP are already HoO’s acquaintances. They shared their story in a 2-hour mix, making us walk through their vision of House, in dialogue with their other lives, resistant and rebellious lives, never banal and always disobedient.

Formed by 14 tracks that in alliance reclaim House music as the music of the otherness, as a safe place to let ourselves be, to question and seduce ourselves to the rhythm of melodies loaded with for-coming. 14 dissident pills make up this compilation, a celebration of the existence of queer & POC bodies. An EP that dances collectively in search of the common history of the otherness. Deep bass lines that tell our history in the key of Groove, a history which remains, even today, clandestine, and unknown to many.

Get ready to travel through suggestive and dissident soundscapes, experiences of otherness that connect us and remind us that we are not alone, rhythms that move and transform the soul of the listener. The tracks of this EP tell a story and exist with you, they are just there and ask for nothing in return. They are there for when you want to feel them. They exist in case you need them. They are there for you to play on any dance floor that sweats glitter. They exist for you to dance to how, where and with whom you want.

HoO vol.1 is the shared experience of 14 stories of 16 producers who travel together transatlanticaly, during 1 hour 18 minutes 41 seconds, in the format of House electronic music. A journey to dive into the overflowing world of the most underground House culture. All are welcome. Who enters, stays. The time has come, put on your best dance clothes, tie your shoe laces, fill your water bottle, because the dance starts here. WE ARE TAKING OFF!

1.    AWOOD – RIDE WITH YOU

(04:46 – 135bpm) #DubHouse #DeepHouse

This story begins in Vancouver, Canada. We land as the music starts to play and we feel a strong vibe, in key of Dub House, of open spaces and wide horizons, it smells of freedom. Can you smell it? With delicate synthesizers supported by a thick bass line, we start the engines towards a warmer dimension. The Groove begins. And don’t let it stop!

2.   DON ESQUIVEL – TRÓPICO

(04:51 – 129bpm) #DubHouse #DeepHouse

We continue with a dubby vibe. Its dawn in Mexico and there is a breeze. We dance on a beach with a sample under our arm that transports us directly to the Solid Groove label. It could be the 2000’s. It’s a soundscape full of sentimental and nostalgic pads, where Mr. Fingers and Basic Channel merge in love and harmony in a village in Michoacán. How good this trip feels.

3.   AKUMEN – LIGHT MY FIRE
(04:34 – 126bpm) #House #DeepHouse

We have landed in Los Angeles, USA. Our bodies are trippin’ with this bass roller, smoothed out with Rhodes-style piano chords. It’s groovy but not heavy. A track that, without asking for permission, sets the dancefloor on fire, inviting us to join this journey without stop moving. We have to take the transatlantic line. What time is it? What day is it?

4.   GIO – MISSA 7AM
(07:08 – 130bpm) #DeepHouse #ProgressiveHouse #TribalHouse

It could be Sunday, the bells are ringing and it’s time to go to mass. We are in Berlin, it sounds like a small town in Brazil. Its 7 o’clock in the morning, we reluctantly live it behind and are ready to dance to this exhilarating spiritual rhythm. Our past must be danced through. We swap the church pews for Tribal House and get back on the dancefloor.

5.   FEASTING – INVANO
(05:47 – 130bpm) #ItaloHouse #TranceHouse #TribalHouse

Without going far, while staying at 130bpm with the celestial rhythm ascending, in this Italo-House-Trance spacey cut. We are still in Berlin, even though now it smells like Santiago de Chile, reminding us of the migrant experience, that strange idea of crossing the Equator in a matter of hours, and crossing the fragile summer-winter temporal membrane. The impossible bouquet.

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/invano

6.   THEORETIC – BLOOM2
(04:04 – 130bpm) #DeepHouse #House

What goes up must come down. So we go deep down to the very roots of House music with this amazing groove. We camp out in Brooklyn. This track is one that bears witness to the sort of hibernation, restoration, and then finally, growth that happens coming out of the cold, winter blues season. Allow yourself to hear the tension in the song, but also the immense release.

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/bloom2

7.   LUISA HOUSEWORKS – LAWS OF ATTRACTION
(04:46 – 128bpm) #DeepHouse #House

A Zeppelin takes us all the way to El Paso, Texas, to stay on the deeper side of things with this homage to the roots of house music. A wonderful late-night DJ tool for playing on any dancefloor that deserves to be danced on. A tribute to Soulphiction, who sadly isn’t with us anymore. A sonorous ode to life that transmits fresh Deep House vibes.

8.   SCOTIA – DOLLS IN THE COFFEE POT
(05:31 – 128bpm) #JackinHouse #Booty #AcidHouse

On a train bound for New York, in search of an adrenaline-pumping coffee. Things get nasty and rough with this Chicago inspired jackin’ groovy dirty track. A track made with a few pieces of classic hardware, with plenty of tape hiss and a lot of sassy attitude. Caffeine has worked, increases heart rate, state of exaltation ON mode.

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/dolls-in-the-coffee-pot

9.   PANOOC – TOUCH
(06:11 – 131bpm) #House #Hardgroove #HiEnergy

After recharging our energies we open our eyes in Scotland, UK.  We head straight to the club´s dancefloor to seduce and touch each other dancing with this sexy and eerie Hi-Energy tinged track. Feel the 80’s twist that’s distinctly queer, deep & sensual, before submerging yourself into a dreamlike finale. A time hole appears, taking us back to where we came from. The spiral starts.

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/touch

10. KNDYFRK – DORIAN UGLY
(05:53 – 125bpm) #AcidHouse

We are taken to a dark basement by this bass-intensive Acid House track, which is a tribute to the queer culture of New York City, and to the ballroom icon Dorian Corey and her definitive definition of the art of throwing shade. Turn up the intensity with this housy track inspired by the sound of the NYC underground. The Brooklyn Bridge never sleeps. The hot air balloon awaits us.

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/dorian-ugly

11.  TORVVIC – DULCE
(06:03 – 132bpm) #HardHouse #Hardgroove #BubblegumPop

We cross the Atlantic Ocean to Madrid, nothing is what it is, it sounds like Texas, but it’s not. Peak time beefy and very tasty Hard-House, inspired by the unapologetic sensuality of 90s Bubblegum Pop, this track embraces the dichotomy of its era – where lyrics danced between innocence and suggestion while maintaining a picture-perfect facade. Bubble gum POPped off!

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/dulce

12. RIVA + BIANCA – EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE
(05:27 – 129bpm) #Garage #House #EuroHouse

This voyage of transatlantic alliances takes us dancing on a roller coaster ride to Philadelphia. Our hands are totally in the air to receive this diva anthem, by and for divas.  A nod of appreciation for the 90’s Euro Dance era through a minimal tech lens, inspired by Everything, by 49ers featuring Ann-Marie Smith and her incredible voice, released on Media Records in 1993.

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/everything-everywhere

13. JACKI-E – GETTING IT OFF THE GROUND
(07:35 – 135bpm) #HardHouse #Rave #Trance

The ecstasy of the ride is coming to an end. The beats get really pumpin’ for this UK warehouse rave destroyer. We’re sweating and bouncing at some cheeky rave in some TAZ, Temporary Autonomous Zone, in North Wales. Driven by powerful drums and vocal samples pitched both up and down, this track is dancefloor filler with catchy hooks and quirky fills.

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/getting-it-off-the-ground

14.  A FRIEND OF JACKIE – WE CAN HANG
(06:05 – 126bpm) #HardHouse #Afrofuturism

Recurring meeting point and last stop of this journey, NYC. We round up with a visit to the psychedelic Afrofuturistic realms of Jamal Moss and the pristine world of Detroit Hi Tech Soul Techno. A celebration of the club, the atmosphere, the soundsystem, the energy and its shifts throughout a collective & sweaty House night. Open your eyes and breathe slowly. We have just arrived.

https://otherstothefront.bandcamp.com/track/we-can-hang

*This journey is a piece of House fiction that tells a story of the otherness based on real experiences where, in the form of a poetic narrative collage, some of the texts written by the producers are entangled with the lyrical fantasy of HoO.
